our new mail slot

We've installed a mail slot because they are cool and it will stop the bastards from stealing our mail.

About a month ago, we got a scare when one of neighbors reported seeing a man going through our mail and peeking in our windows while we were at work. She called the cops, and the guy who took the call remembered us from an earlier incident and came by and got me at work. The good and bad of this particular neighborhood lifestyle...

Anyway, we weren't ever sure that any of our mail was missing, except that I never did get paid for a web dev job from the end of the summer. That check was later resent and the incident had recently started to fade.

A few nights ago, though, I was left a mysterious message from a woman with the kind of name that made me think that she might live close by. When I called her back, she asked if I'd lost a check? and if so, was there maybe a 10 of 15 dollar reward for it's return? I thanked her and told that the check had been cancelled, to just forget about it.

And so we thought about this -- someone had gotten our mail, they were just too stupid or whatever to be able to cash a decent-sized check. I mean, they fucking scored exactly what they would've been looking for, and then couldn't actually follow through. The hood seems so much craftier on TV.

Today we installed a mail slot, so we won't have to worry about this as much any more.

I bet you're loving this season of The Wire! Incidentally, I'm even closer to my (city) job than you are to yours :) I'm in southside, but I spent eight years up in your neck of the woods (or neck of the 'hood, as the case may be).
