replacing transom glass
R. took it upon herself to replace the glass in the transom over the back door in the hallway.
We have two transom windows in the house, one over the front foor and one over the back door in the hallway downstairs. The front had been painted over at somepoint and getting that scraped clean happened really early in the process, maybe before we even moved in.
The back transom window has two panes, one of which was cracked, both of which had had been covered with duct tape and partially painted over. It was not nice, but had never been enough of an issue to get around to fixing.
From before moving in (Aug.2003)
R. picked up some new glass at a local glass shop. The new glass panels are of a type that have tiny bubbles in them, referred to as seeded glass.
The installation went smoothly. The old glass and glazing came out easily enough. The most difficult part of the proces was finding new glazing points at Lowe's, this having been an on&off search for months.
removing the old glass
success!

I know R's father. I am not suprised that she is a very handy repairperson. The acorn does not fall... etc.

R. has always done a great job with everything she's tackled. Got it from her Dad; knowing Bob Villa and being once removed from Martha Stewart (the 6 degrees thing!)

Greetings! My husband and I are renovating a house in the Museum District...we need to replace glass in about 20 windows--would you mind sharing what local glass shop you used? Thank you!

Michelle,
I went to Jomoco Studio at 8416 Staples Mill Rd Richmond, VA 23228, (804) 262-3551.
The folks there are pretty helpful and if you have the measurements they will probably cut all the glass for you. I cut the glass myself and the very last piece, of course, broke into more pieces than I needed. I'll have them cut the next one for me!
Just as a warning, they have a ton of glass and it's all beautiful but it's not all for window replacement so get someone to help you before you fall in love with a piece that's wrong for your window type.
Good luck!
