« we have a drywall crew in the house | Main | some tape and mud... »

drywall day 2

The 3-man crew was here yesterday for just over 12 hours and did manage to hang the entire space downstairs. Today there is one guy on stilts taping and mudding; it is much more quiet...

They worked until darkness last night so we weren't able to get any after pictures of yesterday's accomplishments until this (rainy) morning.

Through the 3 rooms. (2 days ago)

This is the termite corner that was so vexing 2 years ago.

Going downstairs for coffee this morning, I still anticipated the old downstairs, or the most recent version of the downstairs, anyway. It is the image that I hold in my mind. Having stretched this process out for so long has involved different months of having different walls up or gone, the tools stacked in different places, shifting expectations of when/if we would ever even get to this point.

Some of the space seem smaller and then again maybe not. The perspective is changed now you can't see all the way through the house. Sounds from inside the rooms are echoier; the outside (and the dog upstairs) are muffled. Some places seem darker, other more bright.

The experience is much like when we had the back porch rebuilt at the end of 2004. There is both great anticipation to see the finished environment and a kind of nervousness -- we've looked forward to this for so long... The drywall install is different in that we had to do so much more work to get to this point than we did for the porch.

I got this advice from someone in the know about having a drywall installation:

"You should take a photo of every wall and ceiling where they will be hanging drywall. If possible put masking tape over the various electrical boxes, etc. and spraypaint them some flourescent color. That goes for anything that should end up on the outside of the drywall. The paint will help them see the stuff they need to cut around, and the photos will help you find anything they miss. At least take photos- it is cheap insurance, 'cuz those guys (drywallers in general) like to roll and so they sometimes, even often, cover things up. Just sayin'."

I am soooo envious. My new walls probably won't be a reality for some months to come. I am very very very excited for you and look forward to more pictures!
