either an opossum or a small monkey has been in our house

It is sort of like that joke that goes, "how do you know when an elephant has been in your refrigerator?"

A footprint on a piece of primed siding.

So last night we heard a sound downstairs. I went down with a hammer and flashlight and the extension rod from the paint roller looking to see what might be lurking but didn't see anything out of place or broken-looking. This morning, though, there was a bag of rice moved across the kitchen and opened, and there are foortprints all over the sink, counter, and microwave. Unless there are also wild monkeys in the neighborhood, we have been visited by an opossum again.

We can only find 2 places that the creature could've entered the house and we'll be blocking those off this evening.

You DO seem to attract all sorts of critters, don't you! Are you sure it wasn't a cat wearing boots??

Not sure about Richmond, but in other pts of VA Animal Control will come and put a trap out for you. Opossum or monkey, they might help you out.

If we lived a little closer I would loan you my "hunting dog" (Siberian Husky) she has caught a number of opossums this summer and last summer. I still can't figure out why the dumb little things bother to enter our yard - unless they are looking for their fellow opossums who never came home.

Julie -- Yeah, our dog isn't much of a deterrent...
