a distraction
Check out these other wonderful old houses, all of which, I'm sure, also have f*cked up plumbing and termite damage.

What struck me was the lack of landscaping. I guess even our old houses once stood in barren, brand-new subdivisions.

I wonder how many of those houses still exist? And if they do, who knows what they've been transformed in to.

Wow! I have some books of house plans from the Victorian era, and all the houses look like those. But it's different looking at a real photo rather than a drawing. Wow!

Man, unbelievable. They are so ornate and huge.

Those are pretty spectacular! I'll bet a lot of those aren't around anymore. I'll also bet that many of them were designed by The Newsom Brothers. The Newsoms were prominent architects in SF at the time these homes were built. They also had an office in Eureka (my city) around the same time. Google "Carson Mansion" to see one of the Newsoms creations that is just down the street from my house. It's unbelievable.

Wow! San Francisco-where I first fell in love with Victorian homes! Wonder how many of these withstood the 1906 earthquake? Have you seen the books "Painted Ladies", "Daughters of Painted Ladies" and "A Gift to the Streets"? They've been around for a long time, but have great photos.
