a bathroom floor!
We pulled out the bathroom floor almost 4 months ago. For some unknown reason, we just stopped there, leaving a giant hole in the floor all summer. With cold on the way, we've gotten motivated to get everything put back together.
Actually, part of the delay was getting around to working on leveling the great sag in the floor at the bathroom/kitchen wall. We've actually got back to that this weekend, too. Having put in the cement pad a few weeks back, yesterday we put the jack in place and have begun the slow and steady process of raising the sunken joist. And, like we'd anticipated, it was very convenient to have access to the crawlspace through the bathroom while we were working on getting the hole dig and the jack in place. While we were under the house, we took the time to get the water lines and some electrical stuff up off the ground.
Where we'd left of at the end of June...
We when left off, the various layers of floor had been pulled up, exposing the abused floor joists. One of the joists was cut years ago to make room for a waste pipe and the others have varying degrees of water damage. This weekend we trimmed and sistered these joists and worked around the edges of the room to make sure that the new floor would have support all the way around. We then put a loose sub-floor in place that we'll revisit once we're finished jacking that part of the house. It all somehow sounds so much easier and quicker than it really was.
No hole!
We still have to clean up. There is quite a pile of small pieces of half-rotted wood and old linoleum flooring, all which smells just a little like the pee-pee. Yay for contractor bags...
The outside cats [1] [2] have been coming in through the missing floor and just hanging out downstairs. It has become a common experience to go to the kitchen and startle one of them on the way down. They haven't made any messes, so it has been kind of cool; we'll miss them being down there.

What is the process for raising the floor? Do you raise the floor a fraction a day, week, etc.?

GKOAT - The jack instructions said 1/2 turn of the screw every week. Informed and experienced sources have told us that we can do a 1/2 turn 2x a week. Our next turning is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.

I have a saggy back porch (it sags about 2 inches more on one corner than the other) and I was thinking I could just put a floor jack under that corner and crank 'er up all at once. So, no? Man, I really don't want to pay somebody to do this.

Thanks. That's interesting info. I probably would have jacked the floor up to the max in one session and had the house fall in on me. That was the one piece of knowledge missing from my databank. Now, I am truly the GKOAT.

Tim -- All of what we know is anecdotal and based on jacking up part of a house, but the idea is that the joist goes up and pushes/pulls the attached pieces with it (ie the next floor or the roof, even). Some of these will over a short time settle back down a bit. This lessons both the chance of over adjusting for height and causing damage to some attached area.
