towards having a more level floor
The floor joist under the wall between the kitchen and bathroom has sagged several inches over the years. Fixing this is one of the projects that we have to do before it gets cold out, so that we can replace the missing bathroom floor.
This was our first serious work under the house. To be perfectly honest, we've been a bit freaked out by the crawlspace. We tried to contract out the job, but the guy that said he'd do it failed to show up on 2 different occasions and we eventually decided that we've got to do this one.
The crawlspace ranges from 14 to 30 inches in clearance. There are many many spider-webs, random wires, and, towards the front of the house, skeletons. It is a creepy place to be, at least at first. We sort of got used to being under there after a while, except for the dirty.
There is a half-ass support under the joist now, a piece of a 4x6 resting on a few bricks. The bricks have been pushed into the dirt, and one looks to be disintegrating. The plan is to get the joist back up to where it ought to be and put a more permanent support in place.
The sagging support to be replaced.
Today we took care of the first piece of this. We've put in temporary supports that will allow us to remove the failing support and dig for a cement pad.
A certain someone working in the crawlspace.

Excess ductwork.
We also pulled out some of the old ductwork that is still under the house. We hadn't planned on doing this today, but it was in the way. We basically kicked the shit out of it until it broke loose and then pulled it out. It was fun.

You might want to staple up some of that loose wiring, it looks a little hazardous. We tried levelling the back of our house, it was really difficult, we destroyed the basement floor trying, and the house wouldn't go beyond a certain point, the 1" plus stucco that was added to the house makes it super heavy

We need to do this same project. Our crawlspace is scary and spidery and dirty also. And it's a maze of ductwork, so it's hard to move around. Fun, fun, fun.

one of the themes of this saga is the courage you two have found to solve these problems, like climbing the big ladder. thanks, you can't help but be victorious, one way or another!

jeannette -- You have hit that right on the head! We were talking afterwards and it was said that this is one of things that would've scared us away from buying the house if we'd known about it at the time, because we just had no idea about any of this.
