a newer house near by
Our neighborhood is an old one and parts of it have really suffered from neglect. This is changing, though.
Neglect and unfortunate 20th century urban trends ravaged this area. A number of houses around here either fell down or were torn down over the years. We know that there used to be a house almost exactly like ours next door that has been lost in the past 50 years. The house on the other side of us is original, but is empty and deteriorating.
This neglect, of course, is what made it possible for us to have gotten this house.
Near-by new construction, from 2001.
I can't think of another specific residential neighborhood in the city that is seeing so much noticeable change right now, though. One of the contributing factors is that in addition to much renovation of older houses, there has been focussed construction of new houses as in-fill. These newer houses have been designed to fit the look of the existing housing, and some of them are very nice.

That is great that this is happening. My neighborhood has seen a lot of in-fill in the past that was very incongruous with the other, older houses. A group of neighbors banned together a few years ago because someone wanted a lot split on a beautiful old Craftsman so they could build a small, ugly 4-unit apartment building on the lot. We were successful. The design was completely redone and a very nice looking Craftsman-style duplex was built.

Greg - This area is coming back from the worst version of that. There are these awful cinderblock quad- and duplexed scattered around. One that had been empty for quite a while was recently torn down, to be replaced by 3 or 4 single-family homes.
