fixing more siding

We fix a large section of the siding that we have to get to before we can insulate.

Back in the spring, we started pulling off some of the shingles that covered the wood siding. This left a bunch of small holes and exposed sections of rotten wood. There are a few sections of the newly-exposed siding that need to be repaired or replaced before we can finish insulating downstairs and put the drywall up.

The process for replacing the siding is easy enough: first we pull down the bad stuff and then we cut and prime replacement boards and nail them in place. Attention has to be paid to make sure that the siding is going on level, and that the amount of board showing is consistent. Also, the lines need to line up with the siding around any corners, or things look goofy when you can see both walls. We've been caulking the edges and putting on a 2nd coat of primer.

The most stressful part of doing the siding has been getting the boards home. We've been loading the 14' boards into a pickup with a 6' bed, arranged so that one end of the boards are down by the tailgate, and the other end is up over the cab. Driving home, I can see the boards bouncing with every bump. It just seems like something really annoying could happen...

Pulling off siding really blurs the difference between inside and outside.

The difference with the new siding is incredible! I can imagine it's very gratifying to rip out a rotten old board and put in a fresh new one. That's another part of the house that is shiny and new. Can't wait to see it all painted, but then I'm getting ahead of things. Wish I was there to help!
