sites that might work well

Back in January (when it was cold outside!?!), based on my experience with Church Hill People’s News, I put out a call for there to be “more very local community-oriented blogs”. The response over the past 7 months has been phenomenal as Petersburg People’s News, West of the Boulevard News, Hills and Heights, Fan District Hub, Carver & Jackson Ward News, and North Richmond News have all come to life. I also know of sites for Fulton and Oregon Hill that are in the works.

There is still a need, though. Some of the most vibrant and growing areas of the city are not represented. I see a couple of possible sites, if anyone is interested in taking one on:

  • Manchester and Shockoe Slip/Bottom
  • just Shockoe Slip/Bottom, maybe continuing east to Rocketts
  • Manchester and Hull Street and south of there, basically southside east of Hills and Heights
  • Battery Park, Barton Heights, Highland Park etc, basically northside east of North Richmond News
  • Downtown, Broad Street and Monroe Ward and Shockoe Slip

I *know* that there must be areas out in the counties that this would work well for, too.

As I said before, if anyone out there is interested in setting up something for your area, I would be glad to offer any help that I can. Comment below or send me an email.

Hi, John. Here’s another idea I’d like to throw out. I’m involved in the Richmond Free WiFi project at http://www.richmondfreewifi.org/ Might it be an idea for the various community sites to piggyback on the RFW blog and website in return for reciprocal links from the community sites? Since all endeavors are community-driven, I think there might be good synergy there, i.e. the community-driven wireless freenet initiative helps drive traffic to the community-driven community sites and vice versa.

    Just a thought!

    Regards,
    Kory

Kory, one thing you can do for visibility is place a banner on the community blogs. Also, I’ll add you to the directory on PbugPN.

I’m thinking about starting a hood blog starting from Robinson to Strawberry st. and only on Stuart Ave. I think it should be in very tiny font and only take up a small portion of the page.

Thx much, Brenda. I appreciate it! I’m happy to return the gesture on the RFW blog’s blogroll! I’ve been seriously considering purchasing a banner for the community sites. I’ll have to check my finances as the project is a freenet and doesn’t make much revenue (actually, zero as of now). :)

Oops, stealing John’s thunder. I’ll get off the pedestal now.

BTW, great meeting today with you and Jonah, John. Looking forward to it!

    Regards,
    Kory
